Vassilopita with Chocolate Filling and Crumble

If you really love chocolate then you should consider making this Vasilopita with hazelnut and cinnamon hues. Will definately smell like Christmas! Here’s the link for my Greek followers. The rest, please, keep reading!


for the cake

  • 4 large eggs
  • 360 gr brown sugar
  • 200 gr plain yoghurt
  • 200 gr butter
  • 300 gr self- rising flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

for the filling

  • 250 gr grated dark chocolate
  • 140 gr hazelnuts crushed in the blender
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

for the crumble

  • 60 gr all purpose flour
  • 100 gr fresh real butter
  • 90 gr walnuts crashed in the blender
  • 100 gr milk chocolate drops
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon


for the crumble

  1. Melt the butter in a small pan. In a big bowl mix all the rest ingredients and the melted butter, too. Stir until it turns into crumbles. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside.

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a big bowl and set aside.

for the cake

  1. Preheat the oven at 180 C (350 f) at air mode.
  2. Melt the butter in small pan. In a mixer bowl and at high speed, mix the eggs with the brown sugar until it turns into a fluffy cream.Add the yoghurt and butter and keep mixing until well-incorporated.
  3. Shift the flour with the baking powder. Lower the speed and add the mixture gradually until consistent.
  4. Grease a springform pan of 26-28 cm (10-11 inch )diameter. Pour the 1/3 of the cake mixture and sprinkle with half of the filling. Add another 1/3 of the cake mixture and sprinkle with the rest of the filling. Top with the rest of the cake mixture and cover the surface with the crumbles.
  5. Bake for about 1 hour and 10′ until the surface turns golden. Let it cool down and take out of the pan.
